Daiene Vernile

Daiene Vernile was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2014 as the MPP for Kitchener Centre.

Vernile was appointed as the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport on January 17, 2018. Previously, she served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transportation and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Research, Innovation and Science.

Vernile is well-known in her community of Waterloo Region as a former news anchor and producer of the long-running news and current affairs program Provincewide, on CTV Kitchener. She is a strong advocate for women's issues, social justice, high tech innovation, and community building. During her journalistic career, Vernile was recognized with numerous honours, including the prestigious International Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in investigative journalism.

Wilfrid Laurier University recognized Vernile with a 100 Alumni of Achievement Award for inspiring lives of leadership and purpose.

Along with her family, Vernile is an active supporter of various local charitable organizations, including the Soup Sisters, Rotary, the Canadian Blood Services, Hearty Hearts, the Canadian Cancer Society, and St. John’s Kitchen.

An avid long distance runner, Vernile also finds time to play classical violin and the ukulele.

She and her husband John are proud parents of three amazing children.
